Your First Time at a Big Airport
From check-in to boarding, here is exactly what to expect on your first international journey.
Your first trip through a large airport can feel confusing. The good news is that every airport follows the same steps.
Before you leave home
Check your booking reference and the departure time. Arrive at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international one. Keep your passport or ID within easy reach.
Check-in and baggage drop
Find your airline's desk on the departure board. Show your passport and e-ticket, drop your checked bag and collect your boarding pass. It shows your seat, your gate and the boarding time.
Security
Place your bag, laptop and liquids in the trays, and remove belts, coins and jackets. Staff will guide you, so you only need to follow the queue.
Finding your gate
Look at the screens for your flight number. Gates can change, so check the board again before you sit down. If you have time, buy water and a snack.
Boarding
Gates usually open about forty minutes before departure. Listen for your row or group, show your boarding pass and passport, and walk to your seat.
When you land
Follow the signs for immigration, collect your bag from the belt shown on the screens and walk through customs. If someone is meeting you, agree on a place to meet in advance.
Do not worry about asking for help. Airport staff are used to first-time travellers, and so are we, so feel free to chat with our team at any time.
