10 Packing Tips for Long-Haul Flights
Pack lighter, travel smarter and arrive feeling fresh with these ten practical tips.
A long flight is much easier when your bag is organised. These ten habits work for a two-hour hop or an overnight journey.
1. Start with a list, not a suitcase
Write down what you need for each day, then remove a third of it. Most travellers carry clothes they never wear. Choose items that mix and match and fit one colour palette.
2. Keep documents together
Your passport or ID, e-ticket, booking reference and any visa papers should live in one pocket of your hand luggage. Take a photo of each and save it on your phone as a backup.
3. Pack a small comfort kit
A light scarf or jumper, a pair of warm socks, a neck pillow and ear plugs make a real difference. Cabins can be cold and noisy.
4. Follow the liquids rule
Carry liquids in containers of 100 ml or less, inside one clear bag. Anything bigger belongs in checked baggage.
5. Charge everything the night before
Phones, power banks and headphones should be full before you leave home. Keep your charging cable in your hand luggage, not in the hold.
6. Wear your heaviest items
Boots, a jacket and bulky clothes are easier to wear than to pack. Airlines weigh bags, not passengers.
7. Bring an empty water bottle
Fill it after security. Staying hydrated helps you sleep and reduces tiredness when you land.
8. Label your bags
Put your name and phone number inside and outside every bag. A coloured ribbon on the handle also helps you spot it on the belt.
9. Keep medicines in your hand luggage
Carry any medicine you need in its original packaging, together with a note from your doctor if it is a prescription.
10. Leave some space
Buy something on your trip and you will need room for it. A foldable bag weighs almost nothing and saves a lot of stress.
